If you drive along south Cherokee Lane, you cannot miss La Taquiza. Across the street from Rancho San Miguel, the Mexican restaurant glows with colors of fluorescent orange, bright lime green and electric banana yellow.

Once a burger joint, and also home to the short-lived La Parilla Mexican restaurant, La Taquiza opened under new ownership five months ago. Open daily, the restaurant serves Mexican favorites like tacos, burritos, seafood and Mexican soups.

Chef Monica Valenzuela, who learned to cook in Mexico, says tacos and seafood are the best sellers. She also recommends trying other dishes like flautas (a toquito-like dish) and the machaca (an egg, meat and vegetable scramble).

The menu is long and hangs over the windows, where you order. With nearly every dish, you get your choice of over 14 kinds of meat prepared how you like.

Tortas ($4.50) come with ham cooked in various ways, beef (even tongue and brain), tripe, shrimp, chicken, salami or with vegetables.

Burritos ($3.75) are authentic. The super burrito is $4, as is the green burrito. Tacos range between $1.25 and $2.25, depending on filling.

If you are hungry and want something special, try chili verde, chili Colorado, chili relleno or chicken mole. Each cost about $6.75.

For breakfast, La Taquiza offers a variety of dish to get you going in the morning. The menu includes chiliquiles (a dish of tortilla strips, sauce and meat), machaca, huevos rancheros, ham, and omelets.

Pozole, a Mexican soup made from hominy, pork and chili is always fresh and always made, and great on cold days.
