The essence of the verb

But I dare not use the Hebrew word

I am

The reflective eye of the hawk

The wind that channels its course

I am

A part of everyone else

The collective cosmos

The writer’s block

The tortured poet

A piece of watermelon

Juicy with hard black seeds

Verdant shell

I am

A teenage waitress with thin arms

Lifting heavy trays of dirty dishes

A new mother overwhelmed by the exquisite

Pain of birth

Feeling life

I am

The ruler slapped on the teacher’s desk

To get attention

The sharpened wit of too much thought

I am

An overdue bill

A check in the mail

I am

The first blade of crocus

Pushing though the snow

A haiku in a world of sound bytes

I am a tortoise

Capable of withdrawing

Into my shell

To protect myself

I am turtles all the way down

I am rosy-fingered dawn as

On the mourning cry of the turtle dove ... I will be.

I am totally diminished yet strangely nourished by

The Great I AM.
