"Mario Moreno: Vanishing Landscapes of California" in Stockton

Mario Moreno has taught drawing and painting at Delta College for 12 years. Born and raised in the Central Valley, he attended California State Universities in Chico and Sacramento. Moreno has worked as an illustrator, cartoonist, painter and sculptor, was an active member of the regional muralists' movement and has exhibited extensively throughout the state. His works are exhibited frequently with the Royal Chicano Air Force.

Moreno photographed the Central Valley throughout a four-month period, capturing the nuanced verities of California life as manifest in its farms and folks. These photographs, along with Moreno's travels and interviews, inspired his finished paintings. The exhibition explores the apparent as well as opaque and hidden social, cultural and physical realities of the Great Valley. In these works, the paint is applied for its own content and not solely as a vehicle to imitate an image. These abstract paintings explore the relationship of color and memory, providing a gathering of observations and reflections about the people and place we call California.
