"X-Men: The Last Stand"

***

(out of four)

The pacing is sometimes off and the dialogue is often stilted, but when the movie gets going, it delivers the semi-cheesy fun we expect from it. Rated PG-13.

"The Da Vinci Code"

** 1/2

I would be lying if I said I wasn't occasionally riveted by the mystery at the heart of "The Da Vinci Code." I just wish the film would have been more compact, and that Tom Hanks had stayed awake for the ride. Rated PG-13.

"Poseidon"

***

The "Poseidon" re-make is not nearly as character-driven as the 1972 movie, so the lack of development is not a disastrous oversight. The emphasis this time is on astounding visual effects, which the film never fails to deliver. Rated PG-13.

"Mission: Impossible III"

**1/2

"Mission: Impossible III" plays out like a standard, nearly anonymous action flick that places too much importance on gunshots and explosions, and not nearly enough on genuine suspense. Rated PG-13.

"United 93"

****

By telling this thoroughly researched story with sobering respect and a realistic view of all involved, director Paul Greengrass has made a cinematic masterpiece. Rated R.

"Scary Movie 4"

**

The gags come at lightning-quick speed, lampooning every recent movie from "The Grudge" and "Saw" to "Fahrenheit 9/11" and "Brokeback Mountain." It's not the quantity of jokes that's the problem - it's the quality. Rated PG-13.

"Slither"

* 1/2

The film offers a few gems in the way of gross-out humor, but gags involving roaming tentacles and giant slugs trying to crawl into hosts' mouths just don't maintain the ability to shock in this day and age. Rated R.

"Lady Vengeance"

****

Park Chan-wook wraps up his challenging revenge trilogy with "Lady Vengeance," which follows "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" and "Oldboy." It earns its place as one of the most gut-wrenching, unflinchingly hopeless movies I've seen. Rated R.
