It’s no surprise that Juni Fisher just finished writing a full-length novel. Stories pour from her like melt water on a warm spring day.

On stage with only her guitar as accompaniment, Fisher spins yarns about the heartbeat of the American West, about what she calls the Western Vista. Sodbusters, cowboys and cowgirls, sideshow performers and cantina dancers, horses, pigs, chickens and cows all come to life with heartbreak, hope and love, cunning, vice and foolishness.

Her songs explore our shared Western mythology with stories of gold rushes, land rushes and life in the Wild West.

Fisher has deep roots in California’s San Joaquin Valley, where she grew up in a farming family. It lends an authenticity to her music; she deeply understands rural Western life.

She’s an experienced horse trainer, and her long and deep relationship with horses led to her most recent album, “Listen... to the horse,” which was featured in the independent film “Out of the Wild,” and has become the official music of the cowboy dressage world.

“I could do three shows back to back and do different material in each of them,” said Fisher, who has seven albums to her name. Each show would be filled with the lightness and luminosity of humanity that she brings to all her work, she said.

Fisher is currently writing another book, as well as touring full time.

“I have a lot in my albums that I could go back to and do a literary version,” she said with a laugh.

In the meantime, she’ll go on presenting her combination of stories, songs, and gentle stand-up comedy.

“I like to bring a lot of laughter into it, even if it’s serious,” she said. “I’ll make ‘em laugh and make them cry. Laugh, cry and think.”

Juni Fisher’s performance is part of the Ovations 2018 Performing Arts Series, a concert series presented by the Calaveras County Arts Council, a 36-year-old nonprofit organization, partially funded by the California Arts Council.
