There are hidden talents lurking in your neighbors. Maybe it’s the woman in the next office, who loves to play clarinet. Or perhaps the teen who mows your lawn lives for the hour a day he spends practicing the cello. Or is your grandfather drumming on a snare drum in the den?

Musicians like these are the dedicated folks who make up the Lodi Community Band, led by Arthur J. Holton.

Holton is also the director of bands for San Joaquin Delta College, which puts him in charge of the Stockton Concert Band and Wind Ensemble groups.

Holton has 35 years of experience as a music educator, including 21 years directing the bands for Lincoln High School. Over the years, he has headed musical ensembles from concert, jazz and brass bands, touring Europe, New Zealand and Australia. His wife, Kathy Holton, plays clarinet in the band.

There’s an oboe player who is a youth ministry leader for a local church. A real estate agent plays percussion. Two doctors (a gynecologist and a dentist) play the French horn. And a city of Lodi employee plays the flute.

The band is made up of current and retired music teachers, professional musicians and students in high school bands. They rehearse every week at Millswood Middle School. Together, they stress the importance of music as local culture and promote live performance.

Every year, they perform for Memorial Day, July 4, and Veterans Day, along with spring, summer and holiday concerts.

This weekend, their spring concert will be performed at Hutchins Street Square, paired with the Stockton Concert Band.

The music to be performed will include George Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess Highlights.” the Second Suite for Military Band in F major, and a number of other selections. The climax will be the joining of the two bands on stage when 85 musicians will perform the powerful “Festive Overture” by Dmitri Shostakovich.
