A new gallery collection in Downtown Lodi celebrates the wild West, the tame West, and the relaxed, lazy day kind of West to be found on California beaches.
“Way Out West” opens Tuesday at the Knowlton Fine Art Gallery, and includes 40 paintings from 11 artists based mostly in the western United States.
Owner Robin Knowlton spent Saturday afternoon hanging the new show, looking for just the right presentation to tie together the collection.
“I’m trying to figure out how they all go together, like a jigsaw puzzle,” she said.
The artists all interpreted the Western theme a little differently, Knowlton said.
“I’ve got traditional landscapes of Utah and the High Sierras, as well as the Pacific Ocean and suburban scenes with cars,” she said. “It’s a nice summer theme, since people go vacationing in the western states, and a lot of my artists paint California, Utah and New Mexico.”
The opening reception is next weekend, and will feature artist Kate Starling of Utah. She was formerly a park ranger, and her love of the natural world heavily influences her art.
“I’m sure she just walks out her door and it’s all gorgeous,” Knowlton said.
Starling will speak on her work, her life and her artistic style. The reception will also include refreshments.
The works range in size from 9 by 12 inches to 30 by 40 inches. All of the paintings are also pictured online at www.knowltongallery.com.
