The glitzy world of beauty pageants does not come to life without some serious planning and fundraising.
“I hate to say, but prior to getting involved I thought all pageants were the same,” said Nicole Nester, spokeswoman for the Miss San Joaquin County Scholarship Organization. “In my head they were all versions of ‘Toddlers and Tiaras,’ but that is not the case at all.”
Instead, these are well-rounded young women with their eyes on college, eager to represent their communities, Nester said. She’s looking for county-wide support of these hard-working young women. The organization is volunteer run, and all the proceeds go to scholarships for the participants.
This weekend, the organization is hosting the second annual Prom and Bridal Fashion Show and Faire. All of the models are former titleholders or current contestants, including the princess program girls, ages 3 to 12.
The first show of the day showcases bridal gowns and flower-girl dresses from Maggie’s Bridal shop. The second show will focus on prom gowns and evening wear. The current Miss California, Crystal Lee, will model in the second show. She was also the first runner-up to Miss America for 2014.
Looking for vendors for your special event? Several local businesses that cater to weddings, proms and other events will be hawking their wares. Guest can also enjoy food vendors and wine from Oak Ridge Winery. The day includes a silent auction and raffle, plus a just-for-fun glamour shot photo booth.
Young women who are interested in meeting Lee can have some exclusive time with her for an extra $15 ticket. That includes lunch, dessert and an 8-by-10-inch photograph with Lee.
The event begins at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at Oak Ridge Winery, 6100 E. Highway 12. Tickets are $15 at the door. Partners include Mia Bella Couture, Oak Ridge Winery, Maggie’s Bridal & Formal and Love That Dress, Prom and Formal Gown Rental.
