Director Michael Mann has made a stand-alone police drama, and the effect is something of a mixed bag. A classic instance of style trumping substance when plot development matters most, "Miami Vice" is yet another in a long line of summer movies that fail to accomplish the simple task of giving us the right amount of bang for our bucks. Rated R.
The jokes are still as crude as they come and some of the gags are a little mean-spirited for my tastes, but there's a heart beating just beneath the rough surface of "Clerks II." Rated R.
"Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest"
This installment has an even more inflated running length, more elaborate special effects, and more plot lines. It's a big, loud, expensive summer treat, and I loved every minute of it. Rated PG-13.
"The Devil Wears Prada"
The film wraps itself up in the same cosmopolitan sensibilities that it attempts to satirize and tear down. If there is a saving grace, it's Meryl Streep, who is both vulnerable and terrifying as an ice-queen fashion editor. Rated PG-13.
This Lois Lane and Clark Kent don't soar like they should, but "Superman Returns" is a worthy return for the franchise. It lays a promising foundation for Superman in the new millennium. Rated PG-13.
