Before I went crazy

I bathed everyday,

Brushed my teeth with care

Each morning, washed my face

And moisturized,

Put on clean underwear

And rhapsodized about

Good food.

I washed dishes, did laundry,

Nit-picked detritus

Beneath my feet,

Washed walls of shadows

That weren’t there.

Now, sharp shower needles

Cut my face,

The image in my mirror conjures up

Memories I wish to erase.

Dirty underwear, yesterday’s socks

I tread on lint that cuts like rocks,

Pulling on dirty jeans, wrong size,

I’ll wash these tomorrow,

I think, as I brush

Yellowed teeth in the sink.

Where did it go,

That great, bright hope,

The ability to cope?

What did I compromise

That begat such a lack of care,

A closet filled with clothes,

But like my faith,

Nothing to wear.

Was beauty the answer,

Or the sentence?

Or, maybe, this creeping

Death is penance.

I only know that I am

No longer

Going anywhere.
