I pruned roses this evening

in someone

else’s garden.

That seems to be my lot in life.

These bushes were planted in his back yard

by yet another woman.

The blossoms were picked

and made a gift to me —

red ones, of course.

I was invited to come

and just visit.

So I stood with the clippers

and cut back the stems so they could

bring forth more blooms

in someone else’s garden.

…and here I thought

she was gone for good.
