Piano! Las Vegas returns with Christmas spirit to spare

Piano virtuoso Ryan Ahern is bringing his Piano! Las Vegas show back to Lodi, and this time, he’s loaded it with holiday spirit.

“We are so excited to do this show,” he said.

Ahern entertained audiences with boogie-woogie, Broadway hits, contemporary selections and movie soundtracks in April. The concert based on his Las Vegas show got a great response, he said.

“It was a wonderful crowd,” Ahern said.

He wanted to come back, and on Dec. 9 he’ll perform at the Square again — but he’s not doing the same show this time.

“My show has a lot of different elements to it that can be switched in and out,” he said.

On top of that, he and his all-star band have been working on a number of new songs over the past few months.

The changes go beyond a few new songs. It’s an entirely new show that April’s audience hasn’t seen.

“That was very important to me. I don’t want someone to show up and hear the same show,” he said.

Ahern rarely gets the chance to do a holiday show, so he’s taking advantage of the timing of next week’s concert. Christmas music is some of his favorite, he said.

“We’ve been planning and putting things into this show that we don’t usually get a chance to put in,” he said.

The band and their team plans to decorate the stage to be festive for the season. They’ve also chosen plenty of holiday arrangements for the lineup, including “All I Want for Christmas is You,” “Run, Rudolph, Run” and several songs by Ray Charles.

When he’s not playing in Lodi and other local cities, Ahern travels around the world. He headlines shows on international cruises — where he’s seen every continent, including Antarctica — and performs in concert around the world. He’ll be traveling to Portugal later this year. He’s also a frequent performer at the Cube Theater in Las Vegas.

Ahern started performing at a country club in Las Vegas when he was just 14. That launched a career that has included serving as the house pianist at the Liberace Mansion, headlining a show at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, and winning a number of competitions.

“Playing music is of course my passion and my life, so to be able to do it for such a loving audience ... it’s a real treat for me,” he said.

Beyond the Christmas extravaganza, Piano! Las Vegas has a few more surprises in store for the audience — though Ahern kept mum on what he had planned.

“We’re trying to make it a fun and memorable experience for everyone,” he said.

In April, he had a great time performing for local residents and really felt the love of his audience members from Lodi and Stockton.

Next week, Ahern is hoping to give a little of that love back for Christmas.

“We’ve pulled out all the stops for Lodi,” he said.
