  I have thought about volunteering to serve on the Commission for years, given my life-long participation in the arts in and around Lodi & current membership in the Lodi Community Band, Stockton Concert Band, and Stockton Wind Ensemble. 1 problem: I work for a living. My office is in Sacramento. Weekday/workday meetings are impossible. I'm sure that I speak for a great number of folks who, like me, would otherwise be happy to serve.

  2much ... while I think there's an important place in any community for the arts, I agree the funding should be largely, if not entirely, private, particularly in times of financial crunch. Unfortunately, this means finding professional grant writers and having people fund-raise full time, ick! But then at least people's tax dollars wouldn't go to something they don't think is necessary to keep the City running.

  Many of us who would otherwise volunteer can't do it simply because we work during the meeting hours and it is impossible to attend (not everyone who works has lunch at noon). The volunteer pool is severely limited just because of that.

  I know this wont be politically correct, but as a taxpayer watching the financial downfall of the City while the economy is in a downward spiral, I just cant help but make this comment. If you cant get enough people to keep the arts commission running, how important is to the MAJORITY of the citizens of Lodi. Yes, I must be a lowlife unsophisticated ruffian, how dare I suggest we dont support the arts. I have a thing about free enterprise; stores that cant get customers must close. If the arts cant find enough support from the public to provide the services they do, perhaps its time to stop pouring money down this cultural black hole. I realize we are talking about lack of volunteers, but if you cant get enough volunteers, you certainly dont have the support of the community. Ive always been critical of forcing the public to support something they may not want; to me one of the all time wastes of public money is Art in Public Places. If people wanted this art, you wouldnt have to pass a law and force people to provide it. This adds a 2% cost to everything new Lodi builds. Can we really afford it?
