Antiques in the spring

Springtime in Lodi always starts with a day of hunting for those antiques you just have to take home: 1960s daisy-print trunks, mint green salt and pepper shakers, black-and-white lithograph postcards and rusted garden furniture. The Lodi Street Faire brings about 700 vendors to the streets of Downtown for a day of shopping in mild weather. One of Lodi's annual signature events, the street faire will take place May 5 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Decorate your walkway or porch with a tin can garden filled with succulents.

String lights in the backyard.

Add a waterfall if you like. Go overboard with flickering candles on a patio table.

Leave your laundry out to dry ... so it soaks up that spring air.

Buy one — or two or three — pair of new sandals.

Revel in an extra hour of light.

Grill something, take a walk, sit on the porch, put your feet in the water before the sun goes down — just because you can.

Celebrate the comedy of womanhood

You may not like to talk about it, but everyone knows about it, and Lodi is celebrating it with a theater experience. "Menopause: The Musical" is a worldwide theater event that people have been laughing over for more than 10 years. It's a little like this: Four women at a lingerie store have nothing in common but a black lace bra, memory loss, hot flashes, not enough sex, too much sex and more. The musical will be on stage at Hutchins Street Square on April 14.

Become a regular at the Downtown Farmers Market

The ever-popular Downtown Lodi Farmers Market is making its return the first Thursday in June (5 to 8:30 p.m.). Visitors can pick heirloom tomatoes, English cucumbers and aromatic melons to pack home. Or you can choose from prepared foods from hummus to lumpia. Those celebrating Friday-eve can unwind at the Lodi Beer Co. beer garden with live music or take advantage of the beer specials at the Dancing Fox Winery and Bakery.

Paddle away

As the weather warms up, prepare to get your paddle on — either with kayaks or paddle boards. If you have never attempted the paddleboard, give it a go. You can rent them in Lodi through Explore Stand Up Paddling Company and Headwaters Kayaks, which also offers lessons.

Frolic in a field of yellow

There may be 300,000 bulbs carpeting the landscape of the old homestead of Daffodil Hill, but these vibrant yellow and white flowers only give off their radiant glow for about four weeks, between mid-March and mid-April. The Hill is a rare beauty in the alpine setting of Amador County that can be viewed on a day trip in Volcano. Getting there: Sutter Creek is located on Old Highway 49 in Amador County, accessible from Sacramento via Highway 16 (Jackson Road) or from Stockton via Highway 99 (Highway 88 turnoff).

Whether you are sending the kids far, far away to summer camp or planning to have them participate in a local camp, now is the time to think about signing them up.

Sow your seeds

March is time to enrich and prepare your soil. Till cover crops into soil and add compost and fertilizer to prepare for summer growth. In March, you can get a head start on produce like potatoes and lemons.

April is when the fun can start. Plant your favorite tomatoes, zucchinis and squash, lemongrass, melons and cucumbers. In batches every couple of weeks, you can plant basil seedlings, edamame and corn. Then, practice patience.
