Cool down with water sports at local lakes and rivers this summer

Looking for some outdoor fun during these wonderful summer days? Make trips to these terrific spots, all either around Lodi or a short drive away. From water sports and boating to fishing and hiking, there will never be a dry day.

Lodi Lake: Swimming, hiking, boating, river tours

Located on 1101 W. Turner Road, Lodi Lake features a park and nature trails fit for hiking and running. The lake’s public beach is open for swimming and fun in the sun from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend.

Paddle boats and kayaks are available to rent from the Lodi Lake boathouse on weekends from April through October, and Wednesdays through Sundays between June and August.

The Lodi Lake boathouse also offers 90-minute charter boat tours along the Mokelumne River from May to September.

Cosumnes River Preserve: Boating, hiking

Just a short trip north of Lodi, the Cosumnes River Preserve is a great place to paddle and take in the Central Valley’s wide variety of plant, bird and fish species. Only non-gas-powered boats can use the docks in the preserve area, making for miles of flat-water boating.

The area also features numerous scenic hiking trails.

Headwaters Kayak Shop: Boating, water sports

Located just off Turner Road east of Highway 99 at 847 N. Cluff Ave., Suite A-6, this is a great place to rent kayaks and stand-up paddle boards. Special group rates are available, as well as guided half- and full-day trips at some of the best water spots in and around Lodi.

Brannan Island State Recreation Area: Boating, fishing, camping

Just a few miles south of Rio Vista, the park is bordered by the Sacramento River, Three Mile Slough and Seven Mile Slough. It features more than 140 campsites and swimming and picnic areas, as well as a number of wildlife habitats and spots for fishing, boating and water sports.

Tower Park Marina: Boating, camping

The premier Marina on the Delta, Tower Park features RV and tent camping, cabins and lodges, and boating.

Lake Camanche Recreation: Boating, water sports, camping, hiking, fishing

A half-hour drive east of Lodi, this destination features water sports, including wakeboarding and water skiing, and has marinas on the north and south shores for boating. The marina features 8-inch launch ramps, boat storage and rentals. Tent and RV sites are available year-round for camping, as are scenic hiking and equestrian trails.

Pardee Lake Recreation: Fishing, swimming, boating, camping, hiking

Located at 4900 Stony Creek Road in Ione, the center is perfect for fishing, boating, swimming, camping, hiking and picnicking. Pardee’s facility has a 10-lane boat launch for easy launching and exiting. The recreation center features two pools, which are open from 9 a.m. until dusk, seven days per week from Memorial Day to Labor Day Weekend.

New Melones Lake: Boating, fishing, camping

Nestled in the scenic foothills, this recreation getaway is about an hour and a half drive from Lodi, near the Gold Rush mining towns of Angels Camp and Sonora. It features two main camp grounds with more than 300 camp sites, as well as nature trails for hiking and mountain biking.

New Melones Lake is also perfect for year-round fishing, as well as boating, houseboating and water sports. A full service marina, which provides fuel and rentals, is available.
