Dear T2T: At the beginning of the school year I was hanging out with a really good group of kids but now I have fallen away from them. I have started hanging out with the popular kids, which is a lot more fun, but they are much more bad.
A lot of them swear and cuss a lot, and always go out to parties and drink and smoke. Most of the time, they’re really fun to be around but then sometimes they do really bad stuff that I know I shouldn’t be getting into. I know my parents are worried about me and want me to be around good kids who will influence me for the best, but then my friends tell me that my parents are just being losers and to keep hanging out with them. So I do.
I don’t want to stop hanging out with them because if I do, I know they will look at me like I am a loser. I have no idea what to do to get away from them. Any ideas? — Sincerely, Badly Influenced
Dear Badly Influenced: I understand what you’re going through. You need to find friends that like you for who you are. If your popular friends think that you’re going to be a loser if you don’t hangout with them, then they are not true friends.
Your parents are looking out for you and want nothing but the best for you. I’m sure you understand that and agree because you don’t want a bad group of friends to ruin your future. You have to look at the big picture, are they really worth ruining your high school education? You don’t want to go down a bad road now.
You know right from wrong and what is expected of you. You control your actions and you should not care about what other people think. This is your life and you are the only one that controls it. Maybe you can hang with your popular group of friends only sometimes, but make sure that you focus on what is important to you.
Find a group of friends that have the same intentions as you, who like to have fun but keep their head on straight. We hope you put our advice into consideration and choose the right thing to do. — Sincerely, T2T
