New: Scholarship Experts.com Essay Contests — open to students age 13 and older:

Topic: Education Matters. $5K Scholarship (Application Deadline: Oct. 31, 2012)

New: VFW Voice of Democracy Audio Essay Contest (PDF) — Veterans of Foreign Wars annually awards more than $2.5 million in scholarships and incentives to high school students in grades 9-12. Local winners can advance to state and national competitions. To enter, record your original 3-5 minute essay on a CD. This year's theme is: Is Our Constitution Still Relevant? Submit all required items to Post Commander Richard Best at 333-1685 prior to Nov. 1.

Veterans Fee Waiver Program: Children of disabled veterans may be eligible for the College Fee Waiver Program. Waiver only applies to California State Universities, University of CA campuses, and CA community colleges.

New: Horatio Alger Association will award 104 $20,000 national and 37 $4,000 California scholarships to high school seniors who have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity. Eligibility criteria include: plans to attend college in fall 2013, strong commitment to pursue a 4-year college degree (may start at a 2-year college), financial need (less than $50,000 gross family income is preferred), involvement in school and community, U.S. citizenship, minimum 2.0 GPA. Don't miss out!

Deadline is Oct. 25.
