Our school's name is Houston School. Houston School is located off of Acampo Road and Highway 99. It serves as a kindergarten through eighth-grade school.
Throughout our day, the seventhand eighth-grade students have seven different classes or periods. Houston School also has many great teachers and staff members! The whole school is very active in fundraising for special trips and other educational events!
We are lucky to be a part of Houston School and always will be! Everyone takes part in helping to make our school fun and effective. Here are a few examples of Houston School events we have already had this year:
Last week at school, it was Red Ribbon Spirit Week. Red Ribbon Week is to encourage students to be drug-free. On Monday, we all signed a pledge that said we were committed to being drug-free. If you signed it, you were rewarded with a color-changing pencil and a red drug free bracelet!
To show our spirit, we dressed up! Last Monday, our school dressed in orange and black, Tuesday was sports day, and Wednesday was twins day. On Thursday, it was pajama day and Friday was wear red day to show community support to be drug-free. A lot of students participated, which showed lots of school spirit! Our school hopes to get the point to be drug-free across to everyone with this fun-filled week.
The other thing that we had that week is a poster contest. The sign had to say, "It is up to me to be drug-free," then they put a picture on it.
Another current event happened recently. On Oct. 23, 26 of Houston Middle School's students left for a trip to Catalina Island. In seventh grade, the students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher got invited. Those who could go, went with chaperones.
On Oct. 24, they all arrived at Catalina and their CIMI (Catalina Island Marine Institute) instructors, Shannon and Bryan, took over. The students got to do all sorts of fun things, such as: kayaking, rock wall climbing, snorkeling, a night snorkel, catching eels, touching sharks and rays and dissecting a squid. They also learned a bunch of new information and came home full of interesting stories.
As you can tell, this was a great experience and the students had a terrific time!
This year in Houston, the computer class is a fun thing going on. The students are going to take on a big task of making the yearbook. There is a total of 14 students in the computer class. They have been working really hard to get this yearbook done and on time. Their theme this year is "Reflecting back on the year."
In conclusion, Houston School is a great school! Students learn lots of new things, while having fun at the same time. The teachers, staff and students all work hard together to make Houston School what it is today!
