Dear T2T: I want to break up with my boyfriend, but I don’t want to hurt his feelings because he is a really nice guy. I just don’t like him like that. I probably never really did, but I thought that maybe we could grow romantically. How can I let him down easy so that we can stay friends? I think he really likes me a lot and I’m afraid he’s going to hate me. — Not a Heart Breaker

Thank you for coming to us with your problem. We can completely relate to your situation. We understand that it is hard to keep a friendship while trying to end a relationship. First thing you should never say is "I just want to be friends" or even worse, "Its not you, its me". Those are both phrases that guys hate and will take the wrong way. Maybe an easier way to go about it is to sit down with him and talk to him about it. Explain your feelings the best you can and tell him the positives about him and how he can get someone that suits him better in a relationship. It was nice of you to consider trying a romantic relationship with him, but maybe you shouldn’t have started a relationship at all. If you have been feeling this way for a while then you should try breaking it off sooner rather than later. Every guy that is into a girl this much will be a little sad after the break up, but thats how life is. No relationship is going to end with rainbows and butterflies, but try making it as positive and possible and don’t make it awkward. I hope you the best with your situation and I hope the both of you can move on happily.

It’s better if you get this over with as soon as possible. Either way, he will be hurt no matter what or how you say it. When you break it to him let him know that you do care about him and that you will always be his friend. You don’t want to string him along and hurt his feelings later on. If he needs space give him as much time as he needs until he is able to reach a reasonable solution with you. If he really cares about you and the friendship he has with you, he will be able to get past this. Let him know that there will be someone later on that will be able to give him the kind of love that you can’t give him. Love is not to be played with, it is very serious.
