Information about college financial help available free of charge

Important to know: If you receive an invitation in the mail to attend a financial aid seminar or personal interview to “maximize your eligibility to receive financial assistance” for college, please check with your counselor or Career Center adviser before attending. There are several companies in the area that are selling this service, which can cost over $1,000.

The information being sold can be obtained for free.

Upcoming scholarship deadlines

Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation will award over $3 million this year to 250 high-achieving high school seniors. Minimum 3.0 GPA. These awards are achievement-based (merit awards). Apply online.

Deadline: Oct. 31.

The Ron Brown Scholar Program awards $40,000 scholarships to African-American high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need. Apply online.

Deadline: Nov. 1.

Bennington Young Writers Award Competition — students in 10th, 11th and 12th grades are invited to submit one of the following: poetry, fiction (short story or play), or nonfiction (personal or academic essay). First place winner receives $500; 2nd place receives $250. Enter online.

Deadline: Nov. 1.

Good Tidings Community Service Scholarship — 20 scholarships of $5,000 each will be awarded to area high school seniors who know the value of helping others. Selection is based on financial need and community service. Download the application or pick one up in the Career Center.

Postmark deadline: Nov. 5.

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards — have you given of your time and talents to make a difference in your community? Prudential provides local, state and national awards of up to $5,000 to students in grades 5-12 based solely on their volunteer work. Complete the application online. Follow instructions carefully.

Deadline: Nov. 6.

  • 8 Share what you know, and ask about what you don't.
  • 9 Don’t be a troll.
  • 10 Don’t reveal personal information about other commenters. You may reveal your own personal information, but we advise you not to do so.
  • 11 We reserve the right, at our discretion, to monitor, delete or choose not to post any comment. This may include removing or monitoring posts that we believe violate the spirit or letter of these rules, or that we otherwise determine at our discretion needs to be monitored, not posted, or deleted.
