Give 'green' this holiday season
The holiday shopping season has arrived! Have you made your list and checked it twice? No doubt that many of the gifts on your loved ones holiday wish lists are the latest and greatest in wireless gadgets and cordless electronics products, including cell phones, laptops, digital cameras, MP3 players, cordless power tools, remote controlled toys ... the list goes on and on!
One thing these products have in common is that often "rechargeable batteries are required." Do you know that many rechargeable batteries can and should be recycled when they can no longer hold a charge, not just tossed away?
Just remember: if your rechargeable battery will no longer hold a charge or if you need a new cell phone, don't throw it away -- recycle it! The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC), a nonprofit public service organization dedicated to cell phone and rechargeable battery recycling, can help. RBRC's program, Call2RecycleTM, provides collection boxes for old cell phones and used rechargeable batteries at dozens of national retailers. Log on to www.call2recycle.org or call (877) 2-RECYCLE to find the nearest drop off location.
For all of those "batteries required" items, follow these simple tips from the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation so you can get the most out of your gifts:
• Follow the charging guidelines provided by the manufacturer. There are specific initial battery charging times for each product before using it for the first time.
• Never return a fully-charged battery to the charger for an extra boost. This will shorten the life of the battery.
• Let a discharged battery cool to room temperature before recharging.
• Unplug your cell phone from the portable charger before you start you car to prevent damage to the phone and battery.
• Recharge batteries only when they are near to fully discharged.
• Call (877) 2-RECYCLE or go to www.call2recycle.org to find a nearby location to drop off used rechargeable batteries and old cell phones.
Make a green gift last all year by reminding your loved ones to always recycle their rechargeable batteries. Please answer the call to recycle!
