2004 Holiday Gift Guide

Spread holiday cheer to those in need

When the holidays arrive, many people are excited about the prospect of giving and receiving gifts, sharing moments with loved ones and celebrating religious traditions. Yet, for the many homeless families, less fortunate individuals or orphaned children, the holidays can be a disappointing time of year. Lack of money or resources can make holiday gifts and delicious meals nonexistent.

Cheer

That is why it is so important for those who have the means to spread some cheer to those who do without. It is very easy to get involved: Here are some tips to get you started:

CHEER FOR CHILDREN

• Contact your place of worship or a support club in your area to locate children who are in need.

• Donate toys, books and games to a shelter or youth-oriented group.

• Think of specific things you can do to improve the quality of life for the child's family, such as buying food for a holiday meal or purchasing train tickets so they can visit relatives.

• Consider serving as a mentor. The Big Brothers Big Sisters organization can facilitate the process.

• Purchase a coupon book for treats at a restaurant or nights out at the movies. This gift will last long after the holidays.

• Buy warm clothing, boots or a coat for the child, and give these items directly to the child, if possible.

• Provide the child with new school supplies, such as a backpack, sneakers, notebook or a lunch box.

• Spend time with a needy child, reading or engaging in another quality activity.

• Plan an outing for a child who rarely goes out. Take him or her somewhere fun, like a holiday performance, the zoo or the circus.

• Donate holiday decorations to a child's home or a shelter.

• Bake holiday cookies with a child.

ASSIST ADULTS

• Volunteer at a soup kitchen or homeless shelter.

• Donate food, clothing and gifts. Adults deserve some cheer, too.

• Treat a needy individual to a day of indulgence. Take him or her on a trip to the beauty salon or out for a day of shopping.

• Spend time with someone who could use some company. Don't overlook the elderly or handicapped.

• Invite someone who is far from family or alone for the holidays to your holiday celebration.

• Don't underestimate the power of a greeting card. Take your time expressing the right sentiments and you can easily make someone's day.

These tips can help make the holidays a bit brighter. Remember, if you are purchasing clothing for an individual, it should be new and clean. Donate used items to a shelter or police athletic league who will distribute them properly. Who knows --after you experience the joy of giving during the holidays, you may want to make it a year-long tradition.
