Spend those cold winter days with new DVDs
No matter how good of a holiday shopper you are, it’s impossible to come up with a creative idea for everyone you have to buy a gift for. That’s where DVDs come in. They’re affordable; you can purchase them at numerous stores and Web sites; and there are tons to choose from this holiday season. Actually, the only problem might be deciding which one to get. Here are a few suggestions for every person on your holiday shopping list.
Couch Potatoes
“Friends: The Complete Fifth Season” — Remember back when Ross had problems with Rachel? Okay, he still does even in their 10th and final year. But in season five, he was trying to patch things up with his estranged fiancée Emily while Monica and Chandler tried to keep their relationship a secret. Phoebe gave birth to her brother’s triplets, and Joey, as usual, was a struggling actor.
The Whole Family
“Finding Nemo” — There’s something for everyone on this DVD. Parents can enjoy “Disc One: The Filmmakers World,” featuring commentary by the film’s artists and a documentary on the making of the film. Kids will love the Fisharades game and read-along story time on Disc Two: Family Fun. And when it’s finally time for everyone to settle in front of the TV, you can watch the actual movie.
College Kids
“Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde” — Elle Woods and her chihuahua Bruiser head to Washington D.C. to take on Congress about the ethical treatment of animals in the sequel to 2001’s “Legally Blonde.” On top of the gag reel, deleted scenes and cast commentary, the special edition DVD includes a video for LeAnn Rimes’ “We Can” and a Delta Nu sorority interactive quiz.
Conspiracy Theorists
“The James Bond 007 Special Edition DVD, Volume 3” — Watch Sean Connery, George Lazenby, George Hamilton, Roger Moore and Pierce Bronson say, “Bond. James Bond.” This six-disc set includes “Thunderball,” “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service,” “Live and Let Die,” “A View to Kill,” “Octopussy” and “Die Another Day.” There’s commentary on all of the films from cast and crew members and collectible booklets.
“Alias: The Complete Second Season” — Double agent Sydney Bristow continues to strut her (buff) stuff in the spy drama’s sophomore year. In addition to season two’s 22 episodes, this six-disc set features audio commentary by the cast, deleted scenes and behind the scenes of the making of the season finale.
Book club members
“Seabiscuit” — Based on Laura Hillebrand’s bestselling book of the same name, “Seabiscuit” follows the undersized racehorse that captured American’s hearts during the Depression as well as the life of his jockey, played by Tobey McGuire. If the race scenes from the movie aren’t enough, the DVD also includes a look at the real Seabiscuit’s life and actor Jeff Bridges’ on-set photographs.
“Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” — While LOTR fans anxiously await the third installment, they can watch and re-watch The Two Towers. Discs one and two of the four- disc set focus on the movie, which includes an extra 40 minutes of never- before-seen footage. Discs three and four feature information on the filmmaking process, including a look at the use of digital effects and how the book was adapted to film.
Adventuresome folks
“Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” — Johnny Depp proved a formidable pirate in this summer blockbuster. The two-disc DVD features commentary by Depp and director Gore Verbinski, as well as a blooper reel. Pirate junkies will enjoy a section on the history of the thieves of the sea.
