Choosing toys that put a child’s imagination to work
If the phrase “construction toy” conjures up images of a few blocks or some old-fashioned logs, then you’re in for a surprise this holiday season. The new generation of construction toys feature wildly imaginative scenarios and astonishing engineering, and promise tons of cutting-edge fun. Kids are noticing these modern toys, making them a hot property in stores across the country.
“Parents like construction toys because they offer clear educational benefits while encouraging creative play. Kids like our products because they’re both exciting and engaging,” says Susan Spiegel, of construction toy company Mega Bloks. “We prove every day that an educational toy can be cool and fun.”
Spiegel points to the company’s Alien Agency line as an example of the winning approach. “Here’s a toy line that features UFOs, way-out aliens, gas stations that morph into secret science labs and all sorts of other amazing stuff, and it’s all powered purely by a child’s imagination. So the kid thinks it’s cool, and the parent knows it’s educational. Everyone’s happy.” The toys are designed for children age 6 and older.
