Maintaining focus leads Galt student to be valedictorian

Heidi Cash has had her sights set on being a top student at Galt High School since her freshman year.

She studied and kept focus on college as a future goal.

“It’s been a hard four years,” Cash said.

With a 4.4 grade point average, she’s achieved the pinnacle of academic success at Galt High — valedictorian for the Class of 2001.

Cash, 18, said she couldn’t have accomplished her goal without support from her parents, Bryan and Holly Cash.

Their motivation also helped her garner enough scholarship money to attend University of California, Berkeley in the fall.

“Ever since I was little, my mom would encourage me to go to college,” she said.

Cash plans to major in English and pursue a possible career in book publishing and editing.

“English has always appealed to me,” she said.

She’s pondered writing her own book, but she’s not sure if she could pull it off, she said. Instead, she wants to help others reach their dreams.

At Galt High, she participated in speech and debate, California Scholarship Federation, drama club and Warriors for Christ.

Cash, who’s lived in Galt since she was 3 years old, said she’s anxious to start college.

“I’m really excited about going to Berkeley because it’s so different than Galt,” she said.

But she won’t easily forget high school, Cash said.

“I’ll miss the people — the teachers and students,” she said. “It’s the friendships which really make the memories.”
