There will be designated areas where tobacco — smoking and chewing will be prohibited.
These tobacco free zones will be clearly marked.
Mark Armstrong, general manager of the Lodi Grape Festival, came up with the idea a few years ago during a conference he attended in Reno, Nev. and instituted the policy for the first time at the 2002 festival.
At the Western Fair Association Convention, Armstrong visited a booth set up by the American Dental Health Association. There he met Carlton Penwell, a representative for the association, and found out a great deal of information about tobacco-fee zones that had been established at fairs nationwide and figured it would be a good thing for the Lodi event.
He spoke with the Grape Festival’s Board of Directors upon his return home and the idea was adopted. ADHA provided signage for the smoke free areas in the Grape Festival Grounds.
The tobacco-free zones include:
• The Fun Zone, which includes the petting zoo.
• All performance stage areas.
• The Kiddie Carnival.
• The Amphitheater.
• All tents and buildings.
Should someone be caught using tobacco in the designated areas, festival officials will ask them to stop or to move to a designated smoking zone.
The bottom line is that the festival directors want to continue to create a healthy environment for all fair goers.
