Board of directors plans for four-day event all year

Every September, the city of Lodi honors its most precious commodity — the grape — with the four-day long Grape Festival celebration. Games, rides, food and festivities make for a good time at the festival.

Though the annual fun fest is over in a quick four days, planning for the event is a year-long process.

In fact, Grape Festival General Manager Mark Armstrong said he doesn’t ever stop planning.

At a recent meeting with his fellow staffers, Armstrong found himself discussing ideas for next year’s Grape Festival.

“We’re not even through with this year yet,” he said with a laugh.

All the planning and organizing would seem a daunting task on its own.

And it might be impossible were it not for all the volunteers who make up the Grape Festival Association. The volunteers come from a cross-section of the community. Anyone wishing to join the nonprofit association pays a small membership fee of $5.

From this group of volunteers, 36 members are elected to serve three-year terms on the board of directors.

Even with a full-time staff of five, plus 60 part-timers, who work year round to plan the festival, there are countless hours of volunteer time put in by members of the Grape Festival Board of Directors.

Most of the board members serve on various Grape Festival committees throughout the year.

Pete Hetzner, who has also been on the board of directors for more than 15 years, said he enjoys the camaraderie with his fellow board members. Working with Armstrong for the past few years has been great, Heztner said.

“He’s a very strong executive director and he and his staff do an excellent job,” Hetzner said.

Caroline Lange, who has been involved with the planning of the Grape Festival for the last 10 years, is serving her first year as president of the board.

She knows about the long hours and hard work it takes to put on a major event like the festival. But she doesn’t mind.

“It’s gratifying to see the results of something you’ve worked on,” she said. “Plus, the people you meet and the support you receive is just great.”
