A meal on the ground

The annual Lockeford Picnic was like a holiday event, held in a shady oak grove every May from the late 1800s into the early 1900s. Hundreds from Lodi, Galt, Stockton, Lockeford and Clements attended the daylong event that featured food, baseball games, horse races, speeches, band music and a big dance at night. Here in 1915, a group of well-dressed picnickers eat their “meal on the ground,” as picnic meals were then called.
