Lodi’s fire department was struggling on a worn shoestring budget with more enthusiasm than dollars in the beginning.
In April 1907, five months after Lodi became an incorporated city with its own government, city officials formed the Lodi Fire Department. Officials allocated $850 for firefighting equipment and $140 for a new fire alarm bell. The department’s horse-drawn wagon and hose cart were kept at Gilbeau’s Stables at Sacramento and Locust streets.
