Amid Prohibition, Lodi kept ‘fermented grape juice’ flowing

Microfilm rolls of newspapers in the early 1920s reveal interesting glimpses into what everyday life was like in Lodi and the sometimes quirky take on life of that time period.

In 1919, the nation’s electorate approved Prohibition, which outlawed the production and sale of alcohol. Understandably in those early days there was considerable concern and reluctance among many grape growers and shippers in Lodi who saw their livelihood endangered.
