A century ago, in April 1912, Lodi residents were swept up in shock at the tragic sinking of the Titanic. Also that month, the community enjoyed the spring with picnics and the citywide clean-up, which yielded freight carloads of garbage.

In early April there was a large gathering in Lodi of veterans of the Civil War. The Grand Army of the Republic held a large "encampment" gathering and picnic on grounds outside of town. The gathering included 100 of the Civil War survivors and their families, many of whom traveled some distance to Lodi. The group announced their pleasure with Lodi's hospitality.
