San Joaquin County was more than 2,500 miles away from the battlefields of the Civil War, but the tension felt here still was dangerously close to cutting a path like a saber slash through a cloth flag.
There were about 2,000 Civil War soldiers who survived the war and later lived and died as San Joaquin County residents, according to Lodi’s Barbara Filbin. Most of those men were Union fighters. It seems Confederate soldiers were less likely to draw attention to their service following the war won by the North.
