One hundred years ago this month, Clements lost a pioneer. Stillman L. Magee was a shipbuilder from Maine. He was a gold miner, store owner, sawmill owner, politician, newspaper publisher, flour mill operator, rancher and businessman who left his mark on the community.

Today, Stillman Magee is the name of a county park just north of Clements on Mackville Road. The park is a popular launching and take-out spot along the Mokelumne River for kayakers, tube floaters and boaters. But few know about the man behind the park's name.
