Morse family journal details overland trip in 1859
The Morse family home, reportedly built in 1869, the year Lodi
was founded, is shown in this 1931 photograph. It was built by L.M.
and Eva Morse on Cherokee Lane south of Harney Lane. Their son
Edmond Morse lived in the home until his death in 1945. The home is
listed with the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1859, L. M. and Eva Morse were a young married couple with a
toddler and a dream.
Like thousands of adventurous souls since the 1840s, the Morse
family was hopeful for better fortunes in the frontier of
California on the far western end of the continent. Little is known
about their life in Illinois, but like many pioneers before them,
the Morse family left their home, packed their belongings in a
wagon and ventured out on the dangerous six-month trek to stake
their futures on a fresh start.
