1912 saw campaign for doggie drinking fountain
Dogs got the loving attention they deserved in 1912 as children donated money for a dog drinking fountain in downtown Lodi. This vintage photograph shows Florence Henning enjoying her dog’s interest in a raccoon on the pile of watermelons.

The hot summer a century ago touched off efforts to see to the comfort of man and animal in downtown Lodi.
Earlier, as a move to provide men with an alternative to alcoholic beverages, the Women's Christian Temperance Union installed a drinking fountain at Pine and Sacramento streets. The drinking water may have cooled an adult's parched tongue, but that summer others also were concerned about the animals roaming Lodi's streets.
