Arthur Thornton was a pioneer who brought a life’s worth of vast experiences to the tiny hamlet in northwest San Joaquin County that bore his name.
Born in Ayrshire, Scotland on May 19, 1838, Arthur Thornton was the son of William and Mary (Kennedy) Thornton. Raised in that mostly agricultural region known for its cattle, Thornton attended local schools. At the age of 14, Thornton joined his family in leaving Scotland and throwing their faith at the promise that America would give them a better future.
