A fire trapped 47 miners more than 4,000 feet down inside the Argonaut Mine in Jackson. For the next 22 anguishing days, rescuers worked, tormented families waited and communities throughout the state anxiously read bulletins from the San Francisco Examiner, the Stockton Record, the Lodi Sentinel and other newspapers.
