A Union soldier in the Civil War and pioneer farmer on the Plains before settling in Lockeford, George R. Garretson was a witness to America's frontier history.

George R. Garretson was born in Bedford, Pa. on April 28, 1845. He was the son of Aaron and Hannah Garretson and the youngest of 10 children. Tragedy came to his life early. George Garretson was just 3 years old when his father died. His mother and older siblings raised him on the farm, and he attended schools in the county.
