John and Norma Gates of Lodi celebrated 50 years of marriage in June. They were married on March 4, 1962 and have resided in Lodi since that day.

They celebrated their anniversary on June 9 to honor Norma’s godmother, Esther Schwindt, who celebrated her 99th birthday. The celebrations spanned a week, with the major event being a dinner-dance gala hosted by Cory and Joni Semer at the Woodbridge Golf and Country Club. Special highlights included John and Norma’s commitment ceremony, the lighting of their first unity candle, dancing to their song, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” a life video by Steve Jensen shown during dinner, and a recognition of Esther while she and John danced to “You Are My Sunshine.”

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
