April is Irritable Bowel Syndrome Awareness Month. It’s worthwhile to give attention to this syndrome, which is not a disease but rather a group of symptoms that occur together affecting the large intestines. Symptoms include abdominal pain, cramping, constipation and/or diarrhea, bloating and gas.
One in five Americans experience symptoms of IBS, and twice as many women as men are affected. There is no specific cause but several factors may contribute including heredity, lifestyle, allergies, infection or an abnormally large amount of bacteria growing in the intestines.
