All carbohydrates (carbs) break down to provide glucose (blood sugar). How fast and how much they end up in your blood depends on the type.
Simple carbs (sweets and sugars; white-refined breads, grains and cereals; and juices) raise blood sugar faster and higher than complex carbs (whole-grain breads, cereals and starches; whole fruits; beans; and vegetables). A well-balanced diet provides 50 to 60 percent of all calories from carbohydrates (even for diabetics), ideally from complex-food sources.
