Borra Vineyards, the oldest of Lodi’s currently existing wineries (bonded in 1975), has just released their yearly “Field Blend Red” — a wine that in many ways epitomizes the heart and soul of the Lodi American viticultural area. Of proud Italian descent, Borra’s third generation grower/proprietor Steve Borra describes this wine as “a homage to the way my grandfather made wine.”
Borra describes his grandfather as very Old World — he’d pick all the grapes at once, and everything would go into one vat, no matter what kind of grape it was. He used wild yeast, and everything was natural — he didn’t know about stuff like sulfur — and he’d siphon the wines into one gallon jugs, one jug at a time, from one barrel at a time.
