Klinker Brick's proprietor, Steve Felten, never expected to be a winemaker. When he married Lori Mehlhaff in 1990 and began farming vineyards owned by her father, the plan was to be grapegrowers the rest of their lives. But in 1995, Gallo cancelled their contracts with Felten Mehlhaff Farm, and the family suddenly found themselves in a sink-or-swim situation.

"We were forced to turn our grapes into wine that we could sell to wineries on the bulk market," said Felten.
