Jennifer: When a group of Lodi police officers or firefighters attend the out-of-town funerals of fallen comrades, how much does this generally cost the city of Lodi in salaries to cover missed assignments, travel expenses, etc.?

This is not the first time this question has come up; in fact, I heard that Councilman Bob Johnson asked the very same thing at a recent City Council meeting. To get the answer, I started first with Lodi Fire Chief Michael Pretz, who told me the city's firefighters are not paid to attend such events. In fact, he said they do so on a voluntary basis and on their own time. Further, the city does not pay overtime or offer any compensation since, he said, attendance at a funeral is to honor the sacrifice of a fallen comrade.
