Jennifer: Is it really illegal to pick poppies? California poppies are the state flower, and I've always heard that it's illegal to pick them from the side of the road.

I remember many a childhood road trip when I wanted to do the same thing, but my parents warned me I could be fined if I dared pluck the pretty orange flower from the ground. Come to find out, there is no such law in the state of California. The illegal portion comes instead from the property; you cannot pick (or damage) a flower on state property including along state or county highways or public land. It is a misdemeanor.
