Household demographics in the United States have shifted dramatically over the last few decades. Nearly 30 million Americans now live alone; about one third of those are men and women 65 years of age and older.
Many senior citizens living alone find it allows them to be independent and self-sufficient, and also find it preferable to living with an adult child or living in a retirement or assisted-living facility.
