After struggling with a drug and alcohol addiction, Saul Smoak went to the Salvation Army for help. In 2009, he went through the rehabilitation program and then was hired to work for the Lodi office.
A year later, his wife Crystal Smoak came to the Salvation Army for help after wrestling with her alcohol addiction. The two later got married and had a child. After going through soldiership and becoming members of the Salvation Army, Saul Smoak felt a calling to become a pastor within the organization. Two months later, Crystal Smoak said she felt the same calling.
