What’s the attraction: While October is a wonderful time to head to the coast, the weather is also cooling down around Lodi, making it a perfect time to get outdoors in your own backyard. The Cosumnes River Preserve offers serene, quiet, peaceful kayaking without the uncertainty and disruption of motorized boats or the noise of frequent traffic. Plus, after paddling, there are a variety of trails to explore through the preserve.
Take a guided trip: If you are new to kayaking, the preserve’s volunteer naturalists are offering an opportunity for a guided tour on Oct. 6. You must bring your own canoe or kayak, so you can either borrow one from a friend or rent a boat complete with paddle and personal floation device for the day at Headwaters Kayak. My friends and I saw one of these tours when we were out paddling recently, and it looked like an informative way to explore the river if you have never been before. The tour starts at 9 a.m.
