As Halloween approaches, preparations are under way for the spooky day. Need some help getting into the spirit? Why not visit a haunted hotel? Located in Mokelumne Hill, The Hotel Leger is said to be haunted by its original owner, George Leger.
Leger built the hotel in 1851 as a wood-framed tent on the corner of Main and Lafayette Streets. Today, it is made up of three separate buildings, one of which was the former Calaveras County Courthouse from 1855 to 1866. The hotel consists of 13 rooms, a bar and lounge, billiards room, a dining room and a courtyard. Guests and hotel staff alike have reported seeing strange things in several of the rooms. Some say Leger himself has wandered in room 7, a woman is heard crying for her child in room 2 and a child is seen playing by the fireplace in room 3. A former hotel owner saw smoke and fire in the bar area several times when there was no fire present. Maids have made beds in rooms 10 and 11 only to return and see them messed up again.
