Less than 50 wrapped presents sit in a pile in a corner of a room at Lodi Adopt-A-Child's office. A room that is usually half-full of presents this time of year.

Dennis Lewis, retired Lodi Police Officer and founder of Adopt-A-Child, holds a thick stack of angel cards. Each one has the name of a child and information about what the child wants and needs for Christmas. The goal: to give gifts to 1,334 children. More than 1,000 cards with children's wishes still need to be fulfilled, Lewis said. Otherwise, he has to send out letters to families, apologizing that their needs could not be met this year.
